Choosing TMT bars for commercial construction

How Fe 500, Fe 550, and Fe 600 grades map to typical RCC loads and ductility needs.

Structural engineers usually select TMT grades based on design tensile requirements, seismic zone, and detailing practice. Fe 500 remains the workhorse for most vertical construction; Fe 550 and Fe 600 can reduce steel tonnage in heavily reinforced members when the design allows. Always insist on mill test certificates (MTC) and verify marking on the bar bundle. For coastal or chemical exposure, discuss corrosion strategy with your consultant — grade alone does not replace cover, concrete quality, or protective measures. When sourcing, share your structural drawings and BOQ so your supplier can align diameters, standard lengths, and delivery batches to your pour schedule.
