MS vs stainless steel in industrial fabrication

When mild steel wins on cost, and when stainless is non-negotiable for service life.

Mild steel offers excellent weldability and lower material cost for static structures in benign environments. Stainless grades such as 304 or 316 bring superior corrosion resistance for food, pharma, and aggressive chemical exposure. Fabrication cost is not only per-kg: stainless typically needs dedicated handling, different consumables, and sometimes inter-pass cleaning. For outdoor architectural work, surface finish and galvanizing of MS may compete with stainless on lifecycle cost. Specify the service environment, design life, and any hygienic standards before locking material — it saves expensive rework later.
